· Basic Information
– Chemical formula: (soluble in methanol solvent), CAS number: 124-41-4;
commonly used industrial concentration is around 28% (27.5%-31%), appearance is
colorless to slightly yellow viscous transparent liquid.
– Properties: Extremely strong alkalinity and nucleophilicity, reacts
violently with water to produce methanol and sodium hydroxide; highly flammable
and explosive, low flash point, sensitive to oxygen and moisture; density about
0.97 g/mL (20°C), flash point 11°C, boiling point close to methanol's 64.7°C
(azeotropic).
– Preparation: Generally prepared by reaction between metallic sodium and
methanol, or under dehydration conditions from methanol and sodium
hydroxide.
– Uses: Strong base catalyst/conjugate agent in organic synthesis, for ester
exchange, Williamson ether synthesis, etc.; pharmaceutical industry synthesis of
sulfonamide, vitamins, etc.; catalyst in biodiesel production; catalyst for
edible oil processing.
– Storage and transportation: Must be stored in a sealed, cool, dry,
well-ventilated place, isolated from water, oxygen, fire sources, usually packed
in galvanized iron drums; full protective equipment must be worn during
operation.
